Founded in 2018 by former ISRO scientists, Skyroot became the first Indian private company to launch a rocket into space when its Vikram-S sounding rocket flew successfully in November 2022 — a milestone that arrived just two years after India opened its space sector to private participation through the 2020 space sector reforms.


Why a unicorn matters for India's space sector specifically


India's space economy has historically been almost entirely state-directed, built around ISRO's mission programmes rather than a commercial launch market. The 2020 reforms — opening satellite manufacturing, launch services, and ground infrastructure to private companies, and creating the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) as a single-window regulator — were designed to seed exactly this kind of outcome: a private company building genuine commercial launch capability rather than operating purely as an ISRO contractor. Skyroot's core product is the Vikram series of small-satellite launch vehicles, designed to serve the fast-growing market for dedicated small satellite launches — a segment global players including Rocket Lab have demonstrated can sustain standalone commercial businesses, distinct from the heavy-lift launch market dominated by SpaceX and established national space agencies. The company has previously stated ambitions to achieve a commercial launch cadence that would position it as a credible alternative to international small-satellite launch providers for both Indian and international customers, competing on cost and dedicated scheduling rather than matching SpaceX-scale capacity.


The competitive landscape this sits within


Skyroot is not alone in India's commercial space race. Agnikul Cosmos, another Indian private launch company, has pursued a parallel path with its own small-satellite launch vehicle and 3D-printed engine technology. Pixxel, an Indian space-tech company focused on hyperspectral earth-imaging satellites, has separately raised substantial international capital. Together, this cohort represents the first generation of Indian space companies built to operate as commercial businesses from inception, rather than as government contractors — and Skyroot's unicorn status is likely to accelerate capital availability for the rest of the sector, both by validating investor appetite and by providing a benchmark valuation for follow-on rounds across the broader Indian space-tech ecosystem.
