India Is Wiring the Ocean Floor: Inside the New Seabed Surveillance Cable Network
India is moving to fit its ocean floor with a listening network. A Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)-led project, detailed in reporting on July 6, 2026, will lay underwater fibre-optic cables fitted with advanced acoustic sensors designed to detect the movement and acoustic signatures of submarines operating in the Indian Ocean — providing round-the-clock underwater monitoring rather than the periodic coverage naval patrols and satellites currently allow. 2
