Vande Bharat Sleeper: First Look at India’s New High-Speed Night Travel

Travel across India is set for a massive upgrade as the first Vande Bharat Sleeper trains begin their commercial runs. Designed for distances over 800km, these trains feature world-class interiors, 'surround' air conditioning, and a specialized suspension system for a jerk-free ride. The first routes are expected to connect Delhi to Srinagar and Mumbai to Ahmedabad.

Transforming Long-Distance Rail

"The Sleeper version of the Vande Bharat is designed to replace the aging Rajdhani expresses. With a top speed of 160 km/h, these trains feature 'crash-worthy' designs and fire-retardant materials. The Sleeper launch comes alongside a massive expansion of India's rail network — the Union Budget 2026 announced seven new high-speed corridors that will connect India's economic and cultural hubs at bullet-train speeds.

The first route between Delhi and Srinagar is expected to cut travel time by nearly 4 hours, making weekend trips to the valley a realistic option for commuters.
